On the other hand killing unarmed people would certainly require extra payment - there is no doubt that those in police who dare to kill unarmed people get paid a lot extra.

I have said repeatedly the protesters have my sympathy, I think they are in the right, but the fact is the protest has a violent element to it. I just don't see that or the escalating violence as the result of some conspiracy because it's a much less convincing explanation than things just getting out of control due to a small minority which if you'd ever been in an actual protest that turned violent (I have, twice) you'd understand how quickly and sometimes unexpectedly that can happen. The majority may not like it but once it starts they are powerless to stop it.

In a situation like this where you have > £100k people camping out for months I'm more surprised it remained as peaceful as it has for so long.

Unlikely because it won't be necessary - some of those sniper rifles looked to me as 12.7 mm round, that's enough to penetrate some lightly armoured vehicles.

The shields protestors are using are not meant to be anti-ballistic, ie like these -

Assault rifles are not particularly discriminate weapons anywhere over very close range, which is why their rated effective range is significantly greater during group, rather than individual, fire - i.e. there's more chance that you'll actually hit something when there's 8 of you shooting.

As I understand it police firearms units worldwide are often equipped with "accurised" versions of weapons that are similar to "team sharpshooter" weapons used by the military i.e. sniper versions of normal battlefield rifles. This is certainly the case in the US and UK, as it increases the chance of them hitting what they are aiming it without hitting anything else.
