    Notice of time off

My end client forced me not to work for a full 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year. Fair enough but they gave me only 6 working days notice of this.

Would it be ethical for me to do the same when I am going to take 2 weeks off? Just tell them 6 days before, that I will be away on holiday over those 2 weeks?

And what if that were the last 2 weeks of my contract?

Have you arranged the handover/handoff before you go?

    If yes, go for it.

Chances are they may be upset and won't even think things work both ways.

If its last two weeks, just tell them and split. It won't matter if they get upset then if you're not going back.

Be the better person, maintain professionalism & give them plenty of notice.

Yes thats fine. Make sure you have all your deliverables handed over and then say thanks its been great working with you however my time here is done and I won't be on site as of xxx

As long as there is a contract that states neither you or the agency is under any obligation to offer or accept work… Make sure that you have delivered what ever you have agreed to do to a sufficient standard and early, then
there is no reason for you to be on the site.

This^ How pissed off were you when they told you? Do you think it is wise to piss your customer of to the same extent. Saying they forced you is a bit extreme and two weeks over Xmas isn't exactly uncommon either. You are a flexible work force and are brought in because of this so you can't be too pissed off when they exercise that.

              Bugger that.
What goes around comes around. Tell them you're off & don't worry about hurting their feelings.

I was assuming that he was leaving this as late as possible on purpose to get back at the company rather than being a genuine situation that he only found out at the last minute. One is pretty poor form, the other, as you say, is just life and you have no other choice but to tell them and deal with it. When he was talking about ethical it read to me he was planning on giving as little notice as possible.

You're right NLUK, he was about to be really petulant and childish and we saved him.
