    Deterance would be covered by the punishement aspect and the overall benefits to society I assume you mean are removing criminals from society (even just temporarily)? Yes that is a good point too as I said it is not just punishment and revenge.

                    Not that bothered what happens to serious criminals if they really are guilty but no system is perfect and they may not be. A long prison sentence at least gives a chance to someone who is incorrectly convicted. If death sentences are used they need to be restricted to the very few cases where guilt really is proved beyond doubt. The b* who killed lee Rigby for example.

                      No it isn't. Murder is a word with a specific definition, it does not mean "deliberately taking someone else's life".
                      Killing an enemy soldier in battle is another case where pre-meditated deliberate killing is NOT murder.
