So science is the one true religion thenOriginally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostOk so if you believe there is a God out there then obviously there must be a religion out there which asks you to constantly challenge yourself, ask questions and advance. That is the true religion in my view. Labels of Islam, Christianity and Judaism mean nothing within that framework, it is rather a devotion to continuous growth and advancement that is the real religion - wherever that leads you to should be the real religion provided it does not then cause you to stagnate.
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.
No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.Comment

Why would a person chose to believe his life has no purpose, the world has no purpose, the solar system has no purpose, the universe has no purpose and just created itself from nothing. Why would a person chose to believe they are a machine rather than having an eternal soul and created for something more important than this petty little existence. Have you seen how petty we are? Look at our lives in the scheme of the world, let alone the solar system, galaxy or universe or existence even! What a pathetic life we have, we live 100 years (if we are lucky) on a tiny planet which is not even a grain of dust in an ocean compared to the solar system, which is then not a grain of dust in an ocean compared to the galaxy ...... etc. etc.Originally posted by SpontaneousOrder View PostWhy would a person who embraced reason believe that?
We live in a Universe which is (as far as we know up until know) Billions of years old.
Should not one ask what he is, where he is from why he exists? Is that not the most basic question that everybody will ask themselves? Or are we just here for fun, pleasure, pain and a pointless existence.Comment

Surely it is an element of religion in it's purest form. Not the form we are taught though were apparent theories are established as "facts" only for new theories to come along and destroy them. Anything which teaches finality can not be of the truth.Originally posted by MicrosoftBob View PostSo science is the one true religion then

All we are is just dust in the wind, dude, to believe we were singled out to be created by some divine being is the height of arrogance.Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostWhy would a person chose to believe his life has no purpose, the world has no purpose, the solar system has no purpose, the universe has no purpose and just created itself from nothing. I don't believe in this idea that God is there with a stick to punish you if you don't believe. It is just a consequence to being stubborn and ignorant. A child who is not taught that fire is harmful will get burnt. If you open your mind to the truth whatever it is (without having a million biases and conditioned perceptions) then maybe you will find it.Originally posted by vetran View Postwhat happens if you don't believe?Comment

So your belief system is driven by emotion rather than reason. I couldn't think of a better definition of ignorance.
What's interesting is that kind of reasoning is entirely self-contradictory. It works in a very deliberately short-sighted frame of reference. God doesn't solve a single one of those questions/problems that you mentioned. Its just a mental trick to put them out of your mind.
Believing in a god for those reasons is a deliberate choice to lie to yourself. It's a choice to be ignorant of those philosophical questions, and to replace them with an artificial comfort blanket called 'God'.Comment

My brother spent 18 months in the West Bank working for the International Solidarity Movement and i went and visited him twice so I guess some may say my views lay firmly one side of the West Bank Barrier. From what I saw (including being wrestled to the floor by Israeli police and losing a shoe), the Israelis are doing everything in their power to squeeze the life out of the West Bank. While i was there I saw a well being destroyed for no reason, a widower who was forced out of half of her home, the day we were due to help with the olive harvest an entire field of olive trees were burnt to the ground, roads where Palestinians are only permitted to walk on a 0.5 meter section.Originally posted by NotAllThere View PostThe trouble is that much of what passes for information about the conflict is political bulltulip - the same lies passed around for years and years. So I concentrate on individuals and how they live. No-one with any grasp of reality would deny that the Palestinians have a pretty tough time, with a fair proportion of the reasons for it firmly layable at the door of Israeli politics.
I know an Israeli and a Palestinian who are good friends. They organise trips into the desert for Israeli and Palestinian youths, so that they can break down the barriers of hate. The organisers get many death threats, but they're motivated by their ignorance ... sorry, their religion to do this.
I appreciate i have only seen one side of the argument, but in the West Bank the Palestinians do need international intervention to sustain their way of life.Comment

To believe that creatures like us could exist without a purpose is the height of ignorance IMO. To believe anything could exist without a purpose is pure ignorance IMO. Imagine that science sets out to find purpose for everything, could the whole of existence be without purpose itself?Originally posted by MicrosoftBob View PostAll we are is just dust in the wind, dude, to believe we were singled out to be created by some divine being is the height of arrogance.Comment
