The fact that these parties are willing to adopt a pale imitation of whatever rhetoric UKIP is using at any given point shows that their main object is power and thus remaining popular, more than anything else. It's hard to think what other principles define these parties.

Anyone who thinks that politicians are after anything other than obtaining and retaining power is pretty naive.

Party politics itself is all about abandoning any personal integrity and standpoint in order to be part of a compromise position that will be elected by people with no real choice and no actual stake in the political process.

When they can claim with a straight face that they have a mandate from elections with a sub 35% voter turnout and they get well below 40% of the votes it's not hard to notice they're not representative. Not tricky to spot they ignore the voting public completely until voting is imminent.

It would seem so, in their view, and their argument it is not entirely without merit.

Were Churches to be forced to marry gay people, it would be no more and no less than a piece of tyranny by which the rights of hundreds of thousands, millions even, of people of faith who hold true to the fundamental tenets of their religion will be ruthlessly trampled upon.

Every right in an overcrowded world will infringe or trample somebody else's. After all, we are imposing on people's liberty if we insist they have to employ black people in their businesses although most think that is a necessary imposition. Should religion be an excuse to opt out of all Britain's equality rights? It isn't just on gay marriage but on women's equality too. What other organisation could put a limit on a woman's progress? And if the religious have such opt-outs, why not others? They may have strong views on some issues too.

Hard to know where to draw a line really. Don't agree with UKIP's view on this but I wouldn't be that critical.

Bit cynical post even by my standards but agree with the last bit. Democracy should be about much more than winning elections, it should be about delivering, in broad terms, the society the majority want. Unfortunately, when they do, they are accused of pandering to the whims of the electorate, knee jerk politics, cynical you turns etc. Most of us want reduced immigration and welfare, for example, but any party that responds to such concerns is labelled as xenophobic or nasty.

Polly Toynbee (a rare sensible lefty) puts it very well:

Nobody is proposing to force churches to conduct marriages. Is the RC church forced to marry divorcees? UKIP is in favour of a ban against gay people getting married. Hardly libertarian.

One of my buds posted this on FB. Here is what I replied :

Britain has long since done things contrary to the gospel. Big Brother was about vanity. Then there's greed, sloth, gambling, not honouring thy father and mother (trust me, I have 4 kids) and only now God decides to send a few storms over? Now if Tony Blair got struck by lightning, then this would add some credence but I just cannot see God singling out one group out of all the other groups that are in technical contravention of scripture.

I don't know if you've noticed, but the UK has been going down the toilet since before Big Brother. .

it is only a matter of time before the various churches that have the opt out of gay marriage are challenged legally, there is already talk.
