Nothing in the news to suggest he's been murdered (yet). He could have wandered off and died of exposure, falling in a stream etc. There was that sighting of a small boy wandering around alone yesterday morning.

No doubt the facts will slowly reveal themselves...

And then taken to a house belonging to a close relative without informing the police?

It will be interesting when the truth comes out, but I'd bet it'll be one of those where we'll have to wait until the trial.

The police tend to go public now when they know someone in the family did it.

They like them to do Press Conferences and the like with the TV cameras there so when the guilty family member admits it/another family member confesses who did it, the press coverage can be used in evidence to help convict them.

When the family are pushing for media coverage because the police aren't interested that's when to get worried about strangers.

Terribly sad case.

Yes, I see The Sun ran a sighting by White Van Man on the front page before the story progressed. Now that sighting has been relegated to one line in the story, I guess that if The Sun had any feelings they would feel a little foolish now.

The vast majority of child disappearances involves a family member but these cases often go unreported because it wouldn't be helpful to have it plastered all over the papers. In this case it sounds like it was treated like an abduction but I imagine there will be some questions for the family to answer now.

My limited understanding of Scottish law is that someone can be "detained" for questioning for a limited time and after that they must be released or arrested and charged (which means they can't be questioned further). Does anyone have any insight into how the system works?

Thats what i was waiting for was the customary appeal by the family, whoever spoke first one it for me, expected one by tonight but not to be now

What on earth were all those amateur searchers doing? I'm in a police search team and we get training. People just tramping along in a row or wandering around on their own like that are likely to do more harm than good in finding evidence. Too many untrained enthusiast can cause a lot of damage to property too.
