    Is it that wrong, though? Success (or at least the illusion of) is generally a sign of determination, intelligence and motivation. Beyond that, you've got the secondary advantages that stem from that - they can look after you (or at least not require you to look after them), may be interesting people and so on. Obviously not everyone who is rich is like that, but generally speaking those qualities are attractive. I'm not denying that there are gold diggers or shallow people out there, I just don't know why people are surprised that success* is an attractive feature.

    *And obviously I'm not trying to say that wealth is the only measure of success.

    Would you chat up a homeless person, or a big issue seller?
