Why did he do it? Or, why can he claimed he did it?
If he had solved a neat but generic issue and wanted to save it he *might* be okay with a warning.

What would have been the long term effects of him having this code?
What does his contract say about IP?

No two ways about this - you(r friend) has made a mistake here and it is damage limitation time.

        Which email account was used?
If I ever have to email anything home I generally use webmail so that nothing is logged on corporate systems.

If they're that worried about security, web mail will be blocked or monitored anyway.

The NHS is reassuringly slack for non-patient data. And as a result I do work on the train on my own laptop, so they win.

I tether my phone, although unless it's just for a quick check on some blocked website, I tend to use my own laptop rather than the provided one for that kind of stuff.

I always find this locking down ridiculous, there is always a way around it and all you end up doing is hindering the developer. Given the developer wrote the code he could just rewrite it all from memory at home, whats next memory wipes on your brain?

You're assuming the code he 'stole', is code he'd written. May well not be the case.

Camera phone to video the screen while you scroll down should work.

Me too, and he didn't get a letter about it beforehand. I have little sympathy.
