Taking that at face value, I'd respond that in general I just don't want to do it, it is inconvenient, every second spent doing it is tedious, it hurts or makes me feel uncomfortable, and it takes time that I would rather be spending doing something else.

Please take that at face value too, I wish it weren't so but it is so. I don't doubt the value of it, just the pleasure.

There are actually some activities that might count that I enjoy, but I can't guarantee to enjoy them every week. Maybe I just haven't found exercise that I like doing.

Cycling, walking, running, dancing, swordfighting, mud wrestling with the laydees volleyball team, kicking a ball around, swimming; all good forms of exercise and there must be something among those that you'd enjoy.

Do you have any hobbies that you enjoy which you might be able to enjoy more if you were fitter or stronger?

Erm, while we're on that question, sex life can be quite dramatically improved by fitness. Seriously. Fit people tend to have more sex and more intense orgasms than less fit people. It's no coincidence that thousands of condoms are handed out in the Olympic village; they're at it like rabbits in there.

Yeah, but emphasis on "stay fit". And also you could gain fitness and muscle without losing weight if you did a fair amount of exercise but still ate too much. You see lots of people with active jobs who are pretty strong and probably fairly fit, but eating takeaways and drinking too many times a week means they are fit but carrying a pretty big belly In fact carrying the belly is probably extra exercise!

There is one that springs to mind

Yes I do cycle the 3.5 km to the station, provided that it's not already 100% certain that I'm going to get soaked, and I'm not pressed for time, and I can do it in the daylight - so that's out for the next few months. I quite enjoy the feeling of doing it so I do get the attraction.

Walking, yes, but not to the station thanks, it takes too long out of the working day. I do like multi-day hikes in the hills but that's a few times a year, not regularly.

Anyway, these are both activities with a goal. I really really don't fancy any of the others, perhaps because they lack that. And I absolutely hate the idea of doing the same thing at the same time every week.

I don't have "hobbies". There are things I like doing, like hiking and travelling, but although they might look like activities that would be improved by fitness (that would be a motivation, right?), it doesn't seem to be like that. I hike up Highland mountains and pass almost everybody else (that's not an aim, it just happens to be so), and I keep going non-stop while I'm travelling. So I don't feel limited there.

No, I can see the payoff for exercising: better health, maybe longer life? For me exercise would be the price to pay for that, and maybe cheap at the price; but that makes exercising a cost rather than a benefit.

I think the problem is you need to put the time in. Cycling 3.5km can't take long but is just a bit long to have a nice 30min walk each way which would be ideal. At least that way you're not "wasting" time exercising.

I use the exercise bike with my iPad on Netflix, on the basis I would be watching Netflix anyway for at least an hour!

Well the 3.5 km takes me 35 mins to walk, might get down to 30 mins with practice, but it will get boring if I do it every day. OK the train is the same every day but I read books, so that's not boring and the time is not wasted.

But I take the point: I just need to spend the time, even if I'm not enjoying it. The original point was more about enjoying exercise, or at least doing it automatically. That is what I can't seem to find a way to do.
