The theory is that insulin promotes fat cells to store more fat and not release it for energy. This organisation is going to do proper controlled experiements on this.Originally posted by MyUserName View PostWhy do you believe that?
I was under the impression that it was a generally accepted fact that to lose weight one reduces calorific intake (or increases calorific burn but this has much less of an effect)?

A cretin would be someone who tells everyone they need to read an article for the truth in it, without any research into whether it's a load of BS. And then backtracks to pretend they never did this...Originally posted by russell View PostEh? I'm just repeating what the article says, not sure how that makes me a cretin, a cretin is someone who doesn't understand the dialectic process, much like yourself.
I'm not convinced myself by the wheat thingWell then you really are a plain cretin because that's just plain, well-tested sciencehowever I believe that a diet high in carbs is the cause of obesity, not the energy imbalance of too many calories in vs out.

I never said it was true, I was presenting it to discuss and your first point was not really applicable to what the article posited. I didn't write the article BTW hope that is clear.Originally posted by d000hg View PostA cretin would be someone who tells everyone they need to read an article for the truth in it, without any research into whether it's a load of BS. Well-tested science?, you obviously have no idea how bad the science is in public health arena. You are ignorant, naive and arrogant.Comment

Right, can you answer my question then?Originally posted by russell View PostI never said it was true, I was presenting it to discuss and your first point was not really applicable to what the article posited. I didn't write the article BTW hope that is clear.

Originally posted by me a bit earlierUmm, well then can you explain why all sorts of athletes, ranging from speed athletes through strength athletes to endurance athletes are not fat? Is it perhaps a little bit to do with them burning off lots of carbohydrates, given that they nearly all eat lots of spuds/bread/rice/pasta?And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Do we have your word as a cretin on that?Originally posted by russell View PostYou are ignorant, naive and arrogant.Comment

What if athletes are self selected, they are athletes because there bodies are efficient at using fat for energy and not storing it?Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostRight, can you answer my question then?
Kind of like asking why high jumpers or basketball players are all tall, is it because basketball makes you tall?Comment

Is that all youve got, calling someone a cretin over and over? At least Sasguru put in some clever wit when he insulted, obvioulsy you are unable to do that with your slow and muddled thought process.Originally posted by Old Greg View PostDo we have your word as a cretin on that?

So you're trying to turn it around?Originally posted by russell View PostWhat if athletes are self selected, they are athletes because there bodies are efficient at using fat for energy and not storing it?

No, look, athletes get fat if they continue eating like athletes and stop exercising. I've been there myself; stopped playing rugby for a couple of years to chase the delusion known as a 'career' and put on two stone of wobble in two years. Then I started training again and shed the wobble. In the past, lots of sportspeople turn into blobbies when they stopped, but now 'detraining' and diet adaption gets more attention. Many, many athletes have to be very careful with diet when they take time out for injury, for exactly the same reason. Yes, there are differences, but they aren't sufficient to explain why people who do lots of exercise AND eat lots of carbs tend not to be fat. I store fat in the same way as anybody else. I burn it the same way too.
The basketball comparison is pointless, because 'tall' and 'fat' are two entirely different things. One is to do with bone length, the other is to do with the make up of soft tissue.Last edited by Mich the Tester; 17 December 2013, 14:28.And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument?
