BBC News - Porn users targeted by German law firm over copyright

How many members of the esteemed panel will feel obliged to give up their evenings entertainment?

Surely the target should the hosting company, not those that use the services? It's the equivalent of charging the viewer because they watch something on YouTube which shouldn't be there because it breaches someone's copyright.

Proving the user was the person who they have billed is going to be difficult - they are relying on sending a letter to lots of people who are too embarrassed to want to fight it. It's no better than having malicious pop-ups which demand a fee to unlock your computer - at least in that scenario you've actually done something wrong in the first place.

If this is the way the industry is going, it's going to lead to more people torrenting filth through an anonymous proxy / VPN, rather than streaming from RedTube. At least if the copyright holders went after RedTube etc, they might be able to thrash out a deal (fnarr fnarr) and make some money from it, rather than risking getting nothing and killing the golden goose (or choking the golden chicken or something similar).

    Ridiculous idea.

Agreed. Trying to spank the monkeys who watched something on this site seems strange.

Apparently there have already been a lot of complaints from people who received the demands but are claiming innocence.

What if they find they've falsely accused someone? Will they take the list of accused users and rub one out?

It's just a re-run of the ACS Law case over here a couple of years ago.
