Students expect £100,000 salary by 40

"Young Britons expect on average to earn a salary of £101,001 a year by the time they reach age 40, according to a survey.

Men in London had the highest expectation, believing they would be earning £124,588 when they enter middle-age. Women in the capital anticipated a more modest £77,725, according to the poll of 18- to 24-year-olds, by Societe Generale Private Banking Hambros.

The balance among men and women in Scotland was more even with typical expectations of £77,725 and £76,739, respectively.

The typical salary in the UK today is around £27,000.

While estimates of earning power were high, few make saving those wages for the long-term a priority. Nearly 40pc said they would save as much as possible, but only 9pc would save into a pension.

100k? Some people have low expectations.

Shame during the education someone didn't point out that taking 2004/5 tax year only out of 30.2 million tax payers only 411k earned over 100k.... In 2012/13 year there were only approx 3% of the population earning the same amount. The maths ain't on their side.

It's called wishful thinking.

Aspiration would have been to say pollster - "By 2040 I want to be a world class brain surgeon, and this would get me to over £100k salary, which is nice."

Errrm, isn't the whole point of this Press release is that a bank/pension company is flagging up that only 9% of these people surveyed pay in to a pension and that this is bad news (for them)
