Ferguson was a one off. It was always the case that once he retired they were going to lose the preeminence they enjoyed under him. It could be decades before they find someone else who can give them the same sort of long term stability and long term success, most football managers, and most clubs, just don't play the long game the way united have for the last 20 years.

I thought that was the point of hiring Moyes, they were investing in him for the long term.

I thought so to but they clearly feel he was the wrong man and I'm inclined to agree. He never seemed to have the mentality for it IMO, his whole mindset, the level of expectation he placed on himself and the team, attitude to the opposition and such like came across as if he thought himself and the team mediocre. He lacked that "winning mentality" that Ferguson and the players themselves had.

One of the biggest problems was that he got rid of all the old backroom staff and bought in his own.

Surely there should have been a transition as they say that this is one of the reasons he lost the more senior squad members who were used to dealing with the old guys.
