BBC Sport - David Moyes: Manchester United manager sacked by club

Most surprising. Is MU going to now go through a Chelsea-style manager-conveyor-belt.

What happens about him being on a 6-year contract?

As a contractor yourself you must realise a contract is only as long as his notice period, which if he fails to reach the Champions League is only 12 months so that is the pay off he will get.

I thought players at least didn't have a notice period, and had to negotiate "buying out early"?

I am hoping that they put some kind of exit clause on performance..... If not they have been royally screwed over by DM.

              From the independent:

The mathematical impossibility of United finishing in the top four this season, following their 11th Premier League defeat of the season at Goodison Park on Sunday, means that United need only give Moyes a one-year pay-off under the terms of his five-year deal, rather than honour the full four years left on that contract. Ryan Giggs could then take over as caretaker manager for the final four games of the season

Ferguson was a one off. It was always the case that once he retired they were going to lose the preeminence they enjoyed under him. It could be decades before they find someone else who can give them the same sort of long term stability and long term success, most football managers, and most clubs, just don't play the long game the way united have for the last 20 years.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

Very poorly managed handover, obviously they never expected to lose Ferguson who was just waiting for one last win before quitting, he probably never expected to win last year so that was the rush.

They should have had 10 good players picked before Moyes arrived, safe bets, signed 5 or 6 of them then given him a sporting chance at doing something this year. Very badly supported from nearly everyone in the club and doomed to failure, all could have been avoided really with proper planning.

It's about time, there's no way he could handle the task ahead.

Van Gaal seems to be favourite, no idea why given the amount of work that needs to be done over the summer and the fact he is manager of Holland until after the World Cup..

Ryan Giggs has ruled himself out of the role as he wishes to spend more time with his brother's family......
