The only change I think should be made to this Scottish vote on leaving the UK is that it should leave regardless of whether the overall result is for or against ... and it should take place tomorrow.

Should Scotland be an independent country?

Once had an interview with a big semiconductor co. in Scotchland. You should have seen the bloke's face when I opened my mouth and my accent didn't tally with my stereotypically Scots name. Poor bloke couldn't get me out the room quick enough.... don't call us etc.Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostIt gives an insight into what life might be like in an independent Scotland. Catholics v. Protestants, whites v. blacks, people with an officially Scots accent v. people with another non People's Democratic Republic of Salmondia approved accent. What's your gas bill?Originally posted by sasguru View PostJust checked my last bill - £350. But that's for a large 4-bed house - with security light left on all night + we're not very careful at all with usage.
And the bill for a one-bedder in Germany is Euro 310?

Feck me, those Germans are in trouble and the odd thing is they didn't even discuss it in the election.
What is really sad, however, is how Lord Haw Haw just doesn't get numbers at all. You couldn't make stupidity like that up.Comment

Had a look, couldn't find it - pay by direct debit anyway.Originally posted by Old Hack View PostWhat's your gas bill?
Quite a lot I think (last winter was a killer), although the house is as efficient as it can be - we have triple-glazing in some windows, double in some, all the insulation possible etc etc
In any case less than it would cost in Germany

Actually that link is a real eye opener. We're constantly grouching about high prices in the UK, but rather surprisingly that link suggests we're not too bad after all.Originally posted by sasguru View PostIn any case less than it would cost in Germany

So your house in Wandsworth, an acutely well insulated one, has a quarterly bill of £350 and a massive gas bill too. And the other chap pays £260 a quarter for all his fuel.Originally posted by sasguru View PostHad a look, couldn't find it - pay by direct debit anyway.

I think one of our old BTL flats would have quarterly bills of £200 and that was a while back.Comment

We used to have quarterly bills of over £450 for a 4 bed house in Reigate iirc.
When we bought the Barn Conversion in Somerset, we had initial bills of well over £180 a month, including electricity, gas and oil. By the end, we were only paying around £35 a month.Comment

1. I don't live in WansdworthOriginally posted by Old Hack View PostSo your house in Wandsworth, an acutely well insulated one, has a quarterly bill of £350 and a massive gas bill too. And the other chap pays £260 a quarter for all his fuel.

2. The OP's heating isn't included, only his hot water.
3. The massive gas bill was for the worst winter in decades
3. We are not talking about usage, you can't compare a one-bed flat and a 4-bed house - the whole point of this conversation is relative prices in Germany and Uk due to Germany's silly energy policy - and as my link shows both leccy and gas are cheaper here.
HTH, BISDI.Hard Brexit now!
