    Bang on budget.

The point was comfortable car that has a diesel engine can do about 50mpg and is good enough to get rid of the Nissan. (obviously not by Northens reply but its an idea) I have never seen any point owning a "special car" then riding round in a shed all week only so that a car trader can tell you that your pride and joy is worth several thousand less than the one on his forecourt when you have to trade it in. If you think the 350 is so clever then factor in the depreciation that its suffering and then just drive it into the ground. But as an aside if you think the 350z is a good weekend thrilling sports car then you really should try a mk1 lotus Elise or mk3 MR2 they will leave the 350 crying upside down in the first ditch it finds. I know this because I had to fish some poor sod out of his 350 that got ditched in reading because he tried to follow my Saab round a bend by the Winnersh triangle and my Saab is crap on bends so god knows what 350 boy was doing to lose his.

I never did either but having two kids and the missus with an Aygo (don't ask, I know what you will say and I tried to fix that option but its a no go lol) we had to have something practical but the mileage I do just meant I was throwing money down the drain if I got anything nice. The balance is the Nissan for fun and a cheapie for commuting. The runaround more or less pays for itself on paper if you factor in the cost of running the Nissan and the depreciation. Also doesn't look tatty after all the use so the set up actually suits me very well. Even the missus has come round to it.

Nissan is perfect as I wanted something noisy with V engine but rag top. I hardly think one example of some moron driving badly is a reflection on a very popular car. More like he had his traction control off and booted it rather than the car not being up to it... and the MR2 and Elise look but I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm looking for a comutermobile to do 12k pa in, but keep coming back to idea of a Zed... Or a Cayman. Not that dissimilar really.
I struggled with this one but rag top and V block tipped it for me.

Z is too expensive to run as a daily at the mileage I do and need family car to keep the missus happy.

          I do fancy a 5-10yr old SL500 or similar.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

            Nice cars.

There is a suite spot so the SL that is around 2007 when they got the updated engine but not the newer facelifted snoz. The new SL is absolutely stunning to drive.

The approach I've always taken is a lowish mileage 2.5 year old diesel from an auction and then sell on autotrader at the end/

Yes it costs a bit more now but the auction saves you £1500 or so and by the time you've driven it 2 years the mileage is just above typical.

Last time I did this a lost £2000 in depreciation over 2 years on a top spec Skoda Octavia having added 65,000 miles to it.

Astra 1.9 Cdti sri – 50+ mpg, 150bhp, 3dr, leather heated seats, satnav, full exterior kit etc. I am having it remapped to 200bhp next week. £4.5k on an 07 plate with 72k this will go for another 3 years. Drives like a dream plus being over 50 years old I look like a proper tw@t. I remember the XR3i drivers of the 80’s.

Did over 180k in my last X Type 2l petrol and 190k in the one before that a BMW 318i. As long as you keep them serviced they are fine.

By the time I change this current car I will probably be able to pick up a cheap Jag XF (circa £10k) with about 100k on the clock. The 2.7d in that will run well over 300k.

Why didn't you lump the 10k and the 5k you just spunked on the Astra and you could have gone straight for the Jag and owned it before the electrics start to go west? The 2.7's are cheap as chips already.
The big problem that you will have going from the tuned Astra to the Jag is that the Astra will be very bloody fast compared to the poor old 2.7

You can get that engine in the Citroen C6 for about £5-7K. Ok its not as nice as the Jag inside, but reliability is about the same.

Very nice, but some people miss the point with cars like the XJ and the C6. Yes, they're quick enough, but the question should not be 'how fast does it go', rather 'how does it go fast'. Civilised, comfortable speed without noise or inconvenience is the point of those cars.
