High mileage big cars

That much time in a car demands a decent motor. I do the same sort of Milage and after a few years of driving cheap/free cars I finally said sod it and bought a top end Mercedes. You don't need to go diesel because the large cars with a larger engine will return roughly he same mpg cost when you take the diesel costs and extra servicing into account.

Take your budget up and look at
Cl class
Sl class
S class

All of these cars mostly lead a charmed life or have running gear that is bomb proof while depreciating like a brick!

But they drive relaxed and are uber comfortable

After my recent experience I'd definitely suggest upping the budget to around 10k and getting a really good car - 3 series, 5 series or whatever......

Edit: Also to add to that, the extra 4k you put on will likely save you a lot of headache, so well worth it IMO. There is a huge difference between a 6k car and a 10k car.

Yeah am tempted by this but I have a 350Z Roadster as my play car so wanted a cheap mileage eater I could run in to the ground. Upping to 10k might work better as the car may actually have some residual value rather than the derisory £400 auction price.

Update : SWMBO has just been looking over my shoulder and likes the 1.9 diesel Vectra so my plans may just have fallen at the first hurdle

Golf/A3/Octavia/Leon if you are sticking to 6k - you will get awesome mileage out of them and the Golf and A3 are solid in particular.

Passat/A4 if you are looking for a bigger car.

Don't buy a high mileage car if you are going to do high mileage.

For that kind of money it's chancy what you get. It might seem cheap to buy but when something goes wrong the parts are for a 50k car not a 5k one.

Toyota Prius apparently has less moving parts in the drive train and toyota say that there are some that can do 400k+ as taxis.
