How many times have we said that responsibility lies with us rather an accountant, yes a good builder should have known this but there is some responsibility on Scrag to do his own due diligence, ignorance is no excuse
(Sorry if that sounds harsh Scrag, love you really )
Beginning to think we have chosen the wrong builder!!
Just had a call from them saying that the foundations on the existing wall aren't good enough and needs to be dug out and proper foundations laid, and that's not in the estimate.
They are taking down a 110 year old wall, WTF did they expect to find?
We are now stuck between a rock and a hard place, in that the existing wall has been demolished and its going to cost a load more to complete.
I think I will have to bite the bullet, once I get the figures.
Never has a man been heard to say on his death bed that he wishes he'd spent more time in the office.

Are the foundations visible?
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think
The final sting is £458.49. Budget was tight for the work anyway, now its tighter.
No warning or anything, wasn't even up for a day, taken down as soon as the inspector made the builders aware (although they should have been aware already)
You try to do the best thing for pedestrian safety and protecting cars on the road, wish I hadn't bothered.
Just another money grabbing scheme bought to you by London Borough of Haringey.
That's all folks, thanks for listening.
Tell the feckers to fix their potholes first. Haringey and Islington must be the only borough where there are potholes in the speedbumps.
'Orwell's 1984 was supposed to be a warning, not an instruction manual'. - Nick Pickles, director of Big Brother Watch.

lets hope the bill for the hoarding is the only worry.. wouldn't put it past the council to pull out planning restrictions on this 100 year old wall
At the end of the day, I would advise you didn't pay the council. There is a responsibility, I can see, but there's also a need, on their part, to provide justification for the high amount they are charging.
As for your building works. Again, I would stop the builders there and then, tell them to stop work, and to invoice, fairly, for the work they've done (knocking down a wall is cheaper than building it). Then I would look for new builders.
I'd ask the council to also provide the laws/bye laws that had been broken, and ask to see proof it had been broken. Then ask for justification in the bill they send. The councils, more often than people like to believe, send bills out in the hope that people are scared enough to pay.
