erm, not very happy about being described as elite.
And I am certainly NOT from a privileged background.

Why not? what is there to be ashamed of? If I remember rightly "priviliged background" was not part of the questions asked so where you are in the class system is defined by what you do and what you earn which means you are there on merit.

I wonder if Andy Murray, Tiger Woods, Lionel Messi feel uncomfortable with being elite sportsmen

Neither am I but I did go to a top uni. And now I'm 'elite'. Perhaps free higher education system was actually good for something.
