Well, okay - I think it is a good idea, assuming the conditions are no worse than any other job.

Unless you are ill, too old, too young or looking after someone then you should either work, do national sevice (not necessarily the armed forces but something) or be in full time education and achiving passing grades.

If none of these apply then you will have work provided for you in order to receive benefits. Either in a workhouse or somewhere else - even if it is painting railings dark grey before the next person paints them light grey.

Actually i'd suggest there are other factors to consider. Many people are invested in property and got in before the boom made it expensive. Anyone who didn't is considerably worse off. That is, to a large extent, down to luck of being born at the right time rather than hard work. To a lesser extent the same could be said about lucrative careers as IT contractors. I know I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

That's very true. In my early career I reckoned that if I had been born three years earlier I could not only have gone straight from uni to a decent job but got onto the housing ladder when first time buys were exceptionally cheap.

In 1979 I paid over twice the price for a 2 bed bungalow than my parents had paid for their 5 bed detached 10 years before.

You have to accept that there is a large amount of the population that just could not do any type of job safely and even the most basic work would require them to be constantly supervised, I'm not talking mentally handicapped but people just too stupid to do anything. You could be talking half a million.

Nope, that's too cheap for me. 7.40 minimum price, then I can save the pennies to buy a big sack of broken rice once a year. I only drink half decent wine, you know.
