He's not Pope Francis I, he's Pope Francis. Same as Elizabeth I was only called that once there was an Elizabeth II.

Yet, strangely, he referred to himself as Francis I when he tweeted the news: "Inmensamente feliz de ser el nuevo Papa, Francisco I" ("Immensely happy to be the new Pope, Francis I")

Maybe it's like Tom Lehrer's friend Henry, "which he spelt H-E-N-3-R-Y; the 3 being silent."

(Incidentally, the time on that tweet shows that he sent it after the "Habemus Papem" proclamation at 19:12 but just before making his speech on the balcony at 19:24; so that was his first public message as Pope.)

Why? Because you're from a place you have to defend its view? Germans don't think Hitler was a good bloke just because they're German. English people don't automatically think the Falklands should remain British.
