End date approaching, when should I approach my boss to see if its being extended?
No agent (hallelujah) as I found the contract direct via Linked In
Like others have said, talk to your boss to confirm intentions. Also, there is nothing wrong with starting to get a plan B together, don't be blantant but there is nowt wrong with making sure the CV is polished and making a few contacts to 'consider your options'.
Last thing you want in this market is to start looking after the contract does not arrive :>
I usually start hassling the agent about 1 month to go, then mention it to the client about 2 weeks to go. At about 2-3 weeks I also start looking on jobserve, update my linked in profile.
In the past I've had clients who are great, extension gets sorted before I've even thought about it. Others like current one leave it until the day before (or sometimes let it go past then all hell breaks loose when they realise you've 'left').
For some reason, some are just like that it seems. Always found it weird because the one that sorted it way in advance, I was always struggling for work, but current one where I'm rushed off my feet (and they've got no-one else) seem to think my continued work here is a given. Doesn't make sense to me.
But bottom line is you've got to consider other things just in case it all falls flat and you find yourself without contract at short notice.
In the same boat as you - mine ends 9th April. I always look at this period as a great opportunity to look for a better contract. So not plan B but plan A with the opportunity of landing a better contract without a notice period
