As pope he's meant to be infalible, or so the billion or so catholics believe. I'm not sure how that works if he is suffering from dementia. What if one day he believes he's a banana? Then a billion people also have to believe the pope is a banana.

Papal infallibility isn't something that applies on a day-to-day basis to anything and everything. It relates to certain rulings (though not all) on matters of doctrine. So if the Pope says "This lasagne tastes like donkey" it doesn't mean the lasagne must have actually been made with donkey meat; that was just a lucky guess.

The issue is also clouded by the fact that nobody, including the Pope, seems to be quite sure what's infallible and what isn't.
