That's the 'silly' part, she failed to allocate trust to someone who deserved it. She met him online, threw himself at him and agreed to anything.

The Oh dear part was he had 3 previous convictions for physical abuse and was acquitted despite beating her brutally.

AIUI Halo Jones may correct me its technically illegal even with a contract.

Possibly. If she'd used the codeword, and it had continued, then definitely. But she didn't use it.

Even if there is a contract, the key thing is that for the contract to be binding all parties have to be of sound mind.

In law you cannot consent to harm (this is to protect Husband/wife battering victims)

That’s the black & white of it.

The grey is that If police are involved in a case like this then common sense is normally applied, with consenting & sensible adults as long as there is no lasting harm (lasting harm can be a bruise that lasts for more than 20 mins) nothing will be charged.

This will not be the last we see of this type of case: 50 shades is escapist, romantic fiction and not a guide: unfortunately too many people think that it is just that.

No problem. The first 18 years are the worst, after that it gets merely impossible...

I thought part of the thrill was being unable to escape.

In the UK I'm pretty sure anything leading to deliberate ABH is illegal, even with consent, besides of course medical procedures such as sex changes (which I suppose might technically be classed as ABH) carried out by certified practitioners under established guidelines.
