We all know directors abuse companies, people on benefits cheat the system and many people cheat the tax systems, we just don't know the depth/stupidity of the situations until you get close. Have to say it never fails to shock me every time a story comes out though.

Over the years I have met someone who boasted about having another kid to get a better council house, someone else who was one of these people that just live day to day and don't open their post to avoid what it says and owe money to just about everyone and so on. I don't know how they live with themselves.
Believe me NLUK I try not to be connected to my dear brother in any way. Like chalk and cheese we are.

To be perfectly honest, my brother is just one of lifes losers. Always has been, always will be - he's 42 years old now so hes never going to change. Things always seem to go wrong for him financially, in relationships, with children etc - all because of his attitude to things. Generally, he seems to have the attitude that 'others have got things so why shouldn't I spend on it'.

Never understood why he turned out like this. We both had the same upbringing etc. I'm only 2 years older as well.

But yeh it amazes me also that there are so many people like this. I know I'm preaching to the converted here - but how on earth can you spend every single penny that arrives into your business without a thought that there might be other things to pay for out of this money?

My sister and I are like chalk and cheese as well, at school at just wanted to do sport and doss, she was the academic. She went to university and I ended up as an apprentice. She never did anything with a good degree and 20 years later lives the life of a perpetual student in Brighton in a shared house and I am the one that went back studying and worked hard at a career. Chalk and cheese and completely swapped the roles we started as a kid. Possibly like you I don't understand her lifestyle choice, not having a penny to her name, floating from job to job so I leave her to it. She thinks I am a money grabbing snob so she leaves me to it.

I have the problem of what she will do with parents cash coming up soon I fear though....

          LOL. Nope.

My tax money is currently sitting in business account ready to go to HMRC.

Assuming its a 50-50 split just point out that once its gone you won't and can't bail her out.

A freelancer mate of mine who I've known for 20+ years has always operated as a sole trader (not IT) and takes the view that just because he doesn't have to submit annual accounts, he's free to do whatever he wants with the cash in his business account.

This "it's in my account so it’s my money" attitude persisted for many years until HMRC decided the debt was too big and wouldn't let him make minimum payments with interest any more.

Consequently, he had to remortgage his house to pay HMRC, is now skint and works every day he can to get back to where he was. Sadly, the attitude remains and can be found on Facebook right now bleating about paying his self assessment by the end of the month.

Like others have said... I just can't comprehend it.

Yep. People like that deserve all they get. In effect, your spending money thats not yours so its no good bleating when you've led the high life for a number of years and it catches up with you.

I got the same problem. Just me and brother so as far as old man is concerned its 50-50.

He's got money, not a huge amount. But his income is enough for him, hes got a nice flat, does what he wants, but he just doesn't spend anything so it keeps getting more and more.

Trouble is when brother gets old man to bail him out he gives same amount to me. I don't really want it but, of course, if I didnt brother would just bleed him dry of all of it. For instance, this time hes given brother 2K and me 2K. If he didnt feel obliged to give me £2K you can guarantee brother would be sniff this out and be tapping old man for the whole lot.

So I keep this money in an account just in case (unlikely) the old man ever needs it.

As it is old man has also lent him £700 to pay the accountant. Good luck getting that back if past experience is anything to go by.

Brother even tried to say he had take coins from his coin jar to pay for new exhaust for his car. FFS - hes a welder - I'd be surprised, bearing in mind the hours he works, if he didnt come close to earning £1000 a week anyway. Not great for the likes of us but its not easy to blow the lot every month!

Can see me and brother falling out big time over this....... :-(

LOL This is the same situation word for word as me. I would say we could be twins but won't bearing in mind your brothers situation. Puts my parents in a situation where they have to bail her out and offer me the same so it costs them twice as much and all I want is for them to spend and enjoy it. One of the reasons we have opted for the offset mortgage is to keep any money he gives us in an account to give it straight back if they need it. I don't feel right committing it to the mortgage or spending it.

Me and PC being in the same position hey... who would have thought that then!!!
