It's just noise now. I tweeted twice. I follow 2-3 people but rarely read their stuff.

I did faff with the iPad version which shows tweets from people who are nearby. As far as I could see it was 99% teenagers posting incomprehensible stuff about their school lives and loves (and hates) I was amazed they so free with posting stuff

These days I only really look at news sites as a result of seeing a breaking story on Twitter. If it's something meaningless like a Royal pregnancy then 140 characters probably tells me more than I need to know; if it's something big, any developments will usually be on Twitter before they hit MSM.

Also, I follow a bunch of non-famous people who are extremely funny even when they're just tweeting about the car park at the shops or a late train, and tend to keep me entertained throughout the day

And I've had one well-paid gig through it - a chap I used to work with retweeted one of his mates looking for a contractor. That was at about two in the afternoon. By noon the next day I was in their office in Farringdon, and after lunch I was starting work

The weather station is my backgarden auto posts every 4 hours and has an amazing 23 followers of which I am not one.

It's up to about 3K tweets now.

More seriously: it's hard to say who you should follow; I can only tell you who I follow, and you may well not be able to stand any of them. I, for example, don't follow any football-related people, but a sports fan would probably find it pretty boring without them. Conversely, you may well be interested in @BenGoldacre's stuff (although it's often completely unrelated to either medicine, science, or his books) yet not be at all interested in the life of @get_mummy_a_gin, a maths tutor from Croydon with an extremely short fuse, or @tinytwinks, a Yorkshirewoman who swears even more than her.

@RupertMurdoch is probably much more fun to follow if you despise him and all he stands for than if you think he's a pinnacle of business leadership, whereas @Brays_Cottage - also a business leader in her field, though she operates on a smaller scale - probably won't interest anybody who doesn't like pork pies or Norfolk.

Of course, anybody on here who doesn't follow @itcontracting is just asking for a permaban

So? Just ignore it. If you don't follow them, you'll never hear from them again.

Just make sure your options aren't set to auto-follow anybody who follows you. Twitter spambots rely on that, because then their spam will get to people. If you don't follow them back you can forget about them. Well, unless you occasionally feel like going on a little spree and reporting them all for spam
