However it's daft to make the case for keeping/removing them on profitability anyway. If we do that and talk about "think of the hospitals" then if our forebears had thought the same, virtually none of our great buildings would exist in the first place. Turn Buck Palace into Executive residences and you'd have £600m in a flash. Do the same to Kensington Palace, etc, etc, etc. Probably gnaw a few billion back. Add to the fact we don't pay them anymore, factor in that people will still come to England, and will still buy tulip, then we're quids in, have no scumbag scrounging mix of Greeks and Germans poncing off us and we're away.

To be honest, I find the whole involvement of the Queen in our politics rather confusing and pointless so I kind of agree with you. On the other hand, our entire political system is very English, formed from gentlemen's agreements and so on!

Has the monarch interfered in politics in recent history (or not so recent) - refusing to appoint the PM or anything like that, etc?
