Curious as to why they picked this family for the story? Pick an average family on average income and there would be a lot more sympathy.

We certainly don't feel as well off as we used to, not much has changed lifestyle wise but we struggle to save.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

A grand a month on groceries!? Waitrose must be laughing all the way to the bank.
I really can't see how they spend £4.5k on utilities either (unless they've really pushed the boat out on Sky and they have a small lake in the back garden)

That's thirty quid a day on food for 4 people; 7.50 a day per person; what are they eating?

For a family of 4 we tend to spend ~ 150 / week on shopping. We could try and cut it down but we dont need to at present.

Im not sure how you could spend 250/ week on shopping.

Just for a laugh I might try it at the weekend and report back on next week's dinners.

Fecking paupers! My mortgage is 2.5K a month!

Why does 80K = middle class though?

Our household income is >150K and I still identify myself as 'working class'. No degrees in this house just a bit of luck and hard work. I was at Tate Britain last weekend to see the PRB exhibition and really felt like a fish out of water with the sheer amount of pretentious prats talking tulipe like they knew what they were on about; I despise all that elitism. I'm no better than a hard working toilet cleaner, just luckier to be mildly intelligent and had some breaks that worked out.

Its an American definition high earner / businessman = middle class. They never had any because like the french they killed or deported the royals & aristocracy, in response those with middle class leanings hid them in case they were thought posh.

The size of the middle class depends on how it is defined, whether by education, wealth, environment of upbringing, social network, manners or values, etc. These are all related, though far from deterministically dependent. The following factors are often ascribed in modern usage to a "middle class":[by whom?]
                    Achievement of tertiary education.
Holding professional qualifications, including academics, lawyers, chartered engineers, politicians and doctors regardless of their leisure or wealth.
Belief in bourgeois values, such as high rates of house ownership and jobs which are perceived to be "secure".
Lifestyle. In the United Kingdom, social status has historically been linked less directly to wealth than in the United States,[5] and has also been judged by pointers such as accent, manners, place of education, occupation and the class of a person's family, circle of friends and acquaintances.[6][7]
Cultural identification. Often in the United States, the middle class are the most eager participants in pop culture whereas the reverse is true in Britain.[8]

No mortgage here. £1000pm on food and drink just for me and the missus and around the same on utilities including a £325 gas bill. The rest is savings and spending money.
