Been doing this for about ten years and hated most of them. Problem is, coming from a

Gosh, I feel sorry for you. What with your poor upbringing compared to the average contractor's silver spoon, private education and otherwise multi-privileged background, it must be doubly hard to take all that bullying.

You can afford to jack it and have big cojones so just leave! In fact go perm and get your own back by hiring your own freelancers to bully........
