The game is to get what you can while maintaining your integrity. If you're going to lie about your past work history you might as well make up a load of stuff on your CV as well.

Sorry bud but I don't read every post in every thread so I haven't seen someone else make the same point. I think lying is wrong regardless who posted it, you were the last one to post when I opened the thread.

Why would I lie to insurance agents and car salesmen? You don't need to lie to negotiate.

      So Naive then.

I met one like you before, who was surprised I hadn't paid list for my new car, when he did...

      Naive.

I dont lie about my past work history, I lie about rates. Nice to try and join the two, but ultimately a fail.

I would venture I have made many more savings in my negotiations than using your method. I'd also put it out there that you're in a minority...

But, keep up the childish insults, they are funny.

It's hilarious if you think everybody either lies or pays list price.

Why is lying about your rate OK but not your skills?

        And which insults precisely?

I agree most people probably lie but how exactly is that an excuse?

When agents ask me my current rate, I start with a show of reluctance to divulge it and then give them a rate which is bumped up twice over, once to what I am after and then again to an unrealistic value because the agent is sure to guess I bumped it up and mentally bump it down, hopefully to the target rate. If that makes sense.

Cant you work that one out yourself?

As for the insults, again, can you not work that out yourself?

No. Lying is lying so if you're going to lie to get more money why not lie to get the gig too?

I haven't insulted you in this thread.

It all depends, where I work all the local agents know what the going rate is for all the companies, including the big finance houses. So trying the I'm currently on Y (X + 20%) when the going rate is X is just silly and probably puts you at a disadvantage.

If I get an out-of-town agent then I might try my hand a little.

With so many roles going on a fixed %age margin there's no point in either side trying to fiddle each other.

So I ask straight back if its a fixed margin and how many others they have placed within that clientco - then what would they expect to place at. based upon this figure I'll say whether or not that is acceptable.

I've had 2 instances in the last 12 months where the end client has asked to see evidence of the rate I said I was currently on before they would offer, this wasn't the agent requesting this it was the end client ! Seems places are starting to tighten up a bit, I was lucky usually I add £10-£20 onto my daily rate when asked, but I didn't on this occassion, told them I was on £99 a day and a packet of beef Space Raider crisps.
