Most contractors are wise to this one. "Did you attend any employee-only events such as the Christmas Party?" is the first question Hector will ask should he come calling. And your answer to that question does matter. Even if it was only one time. Accepting free lunch on the company might very well end up being the most expensive meal you ever had.
This seems too cautious. The chance of being audited is low. Assuming its billable, I would attend, I would not claim for the costs and if hector asked I'd say I wasn't there. I would buy a few rounds too. It's a good chance to get some info and make some pals

Wow!! Many thanks for all your views!! Much appreciated. I think i'm gonna take the cautious approach and decline politely. Altho i do know some coworkers might think i'm doing it for money as they will not know about IR35 and all, but better to be safe than sry ltrs!!

Thx once again all! Long live contracting!

If I attended, it clearly wasn't an employee-only event.

Or clearly you were a disguised employee.

Sounds like an idea for a fancy dress party.

I don´t think I could bear wearing a polyester shirt though.

Yes, and that's going to look good when Hector asks ClientCo if you were there, and they say "yes" because they've no reason to lie for you. Or did you imagine Hector just takes people's word for what they say they were doing? Still, if you want to risk it it's up to you; I wouldn't.
