I like both. But not all paint slapped onto a canvas is art.Originally posted by farout117 View Post...I think everybody is entitled to his opinion, some people like artistry on canvas, some like it on their body.
Sorry, Gentile, I'm sure what you wrote was an eloquent putdown, but I got bored half-way through the first sentence. But hey - take it as read that I'm suitably chagrined by your intellectual prowess.

I used to have a neighbour who specialised in removing tattoos via laser surgery. His customers were mainly those who had risen to respectable jobs and didn't think they were suitable any more.Originally posted by NotAllThere View PostThere's another difference. A person without a tattoo can get one quickly and cheaply. A person with a tattoo can only get rid of it (relatively) slowly and expensively.
I know a genuinely nice couple who are covered with tattoos, and yes they are artistic. He runs a tattoo shop so I don't think he's exactly worried about it affecting his employment prospects.I don't in fact care, though I don't have one myself. I'm amazed how touchy some people with tattoos are when you needle them about it, even faintly suggesting that it's a bit silly. A touch of protesting too much... And then you get some ugly mutt with tattoos that would disgrace a nursery school child's scribbling book, banging on about "body art".
Though, admittedly, some tattoos are good enough and original enough to be considered art.
There is even a selection of magazines on the subject.Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.Comment

I've seen some rather good ones on some ladies. There was a fashion hereabouts a few years for a horizontal tattoo on the back exactly where you could see it when jeans and tops don't quite meet. Some looked better than others.Originally posted by doodab View PostIt depends on the tattoo and the canvas.
My favourite was a cat on a young lass's shoulder. It was cute, just like her.
It can easily be overdone though.Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.Comment

There's a different attitude in Europe as well. I was in a bar with some Yanks a few years ago and and they got really anxious when some heavily tattooed types came in. The Yanks thought a fight was inevitable, but we assured them that they were harmless.Originally posted by d000hg View PostAnd tattoos are normally associated with the working classes, not chavs. The two are very different.Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.Comment

That thread did make me think of this as a gift for you, though.
