Obviously doesn't understand the fact that having a mortgage and making payments on time improves a credit rating more than having No mortgage.

Dunno what it's like now with banks unwilling to lend, but keeping a small mortgage going was also a good way of raising cash from your equity for unexpected events, at a much better rate than personal loans or credit cards. You can always knock the mortgage back down when funds permit.

Some people still assume that as I've a newish car, that I must have a car loan. The idea of buying a car with cash is alien to their economic status.

That or they assume you have leased it.
