No, there are more strikers than left-backs because teams usually play with more than one striker, because of this they usually have at least 4 in the squad. Most squads will have at most 2 left-backs. If they're both out then someone will just cover the position.

Also, when I say there isn't much competition, I mean that the general standard of left-backs isn't as high as the general standard of strikers in the world at the moment. Therefore it's easier for Cole to be among the very best in the world in his position.

Come on, you're deliberately missing the point.

I could equally say that there's only room for one left back in a team so the incumbent has got to be the very best to get in. Not second best. which by definition must apply in some other positions, but the best.

World class doesn't mean they are the best person in the world. It means they could compete against the best few in the world, where 'few' is totally subjective

You wouldn't get to be Man Utd's main player if you're not amazing, simply because they can afford to buy the best.

Cole is very good, world class. However, is he the best Left Back? I don't think so.

I actually think Lahm is a cracking left back, Jordi Alba is getting the ravest of revues, Coentrao does well at Madrid, Evra aint shabby and everyone seems interested in signing Yanbaev too.

I would always pick Lahm over Cole I think.

                England might win this but...

...cannot see it being an easy game and don't expect 3 points.

I would suggest that England not winning would be the best bet to go for in the UK but would not call it.
