They have one of those signs near us that tells you the speed you are doing. I always try to see how high I can get it - especially if the kids are in the car. Why can't they have a happy face if you are 30 or less or a sad face if you are over? All the other speed cameras are like that and I always try for a happy face.

The main purpose of the UNECE regulations is to facilitate trade in motor vehicles by agreeing uniform type approval standards rather than requiring a vehicle model to undergo different approval processes in each country in which it is to be sold.
European Union member states must also grant type approval to vehicles meeting similar EU standards. The ones covering speedometers [4] [5][6] are similar to the UNECE regulation in that they specify that:
The indicated speed must never be less than the actual speed, i.e. it should not be possible to inadvertently speed because of an incorrect speedometer reading.
The indicated speed must not be more than 110 percent of the true speed plus 4 km/h at specified test speeds. For example, at 80 km/h, the indicated speed must be no more than 92 km/h.

The lawyers would be all over speeding convictions if this overreading requirement weren't in placeComment

- The speedos speed, which may provide up to 10 % leaway plus a bit more. Maximum. Can't be relied on
- Discretion in enforcement, allowing a few miles per hour over the limits. Again, can't be relied on
- Oh, and the shear numbers of people that would be caught if 30 mph were rigidly enforced

I know when my car is doing 30mph because I've paid attention and I'm used to the car. My other car took a little while to get used to because of the different engine tone, but now I can do a steady 30 in that without any effort too.
I find this idea that it's somehow inevitable that one will regularly finish up over the limit unless one stares fixedly at the speedo quite odd. As I mentioned earlier, nobody ever seems to report frequently finding themselves going at 25 by mistake.Comment

People are in too much of a hurry anyway, and it doesn't do them any good: for all the stress they cause themselves they're lucky to arrive as much as five minutes earlier on a long journey by speeding.

The only thing odd is the speedo is 20 - 40 ie no 30 on dial, clutching at straws. Fundamentally tho I may break the limit but I've been driving of 20-odd years with no accidents at all so I do feel I should get some leeway, or not?Comment
