How much residual oil? How are you getting rid of the contents? If you empty the tank first - which you surely need to do - then you can give it a quick wash first.

The idea is to run it right down before making the switchover.
Then, I will empty what I can and dispose of it appropriately.

It's going to take a lot of water to clean it out and that water will be contaminated. I won't be able to just pour it down the drain. Wouldn't know what to do with it frankly.

              Phone your local council.

              They have waste disposal experts.

Failing that give Diver a call.

You'll more than likely need to get the tank drained. That will cost.

If it was me I'd wait till the level is very low and cut the lid off and set fire to what's left inside.

In any case I'd either empty a CO2 extinguisher into there first. CO2 being heavier than air it will stop the mixture from catching fire and displace any air out of the tank before you start cutting.

I'd also make sure I'd had at least another 5kg CO2 and a dry power standing by though and I'd make sure any pipework into the house was disconnected and out of harms way before starting.

Why haven't the people who are installing the new tank offered to take the old one away?

Can't you just fill it with earth and plant a big fir tree in it, or bury it in the garden?

Think outside the box, or in this case inside the box.
