There are certain apps that have "features" that don't like "sudo" these at certain stages will ask you for a root password.

    Anyway, works for me, YMMV.

It might only cost £30 but getting hold of them is a bastard!

So for that reason, I'm out.

Yes. I've come across situations, albeit pretty rarely, where only root proper will do.

What are the chances of getting a workable dev environment on one of these things?

                Eclipse, tomcat, mySQL.

Not looked at the specs but 'no chance' or 'some chance'? Cannot see it being 'good chance'

I think this Pi thingy is rather a good idea to introduce young people to computing rather than banging out Powerpoint or learning Excel but so far all I've seen are geek articles by people who are already technologically savvy on using it. How many learning establishments have ordered crate loads of them are using them to teach their charges that their future in IT resides in learning how to do the functions that this tool provides? Sadly it might not help the poor people who were actually in mind when this was designed...

I have full on Apache2, MySQL, PHP and should be no probs getting Eclipse on. I also have Django, Python, Ruby and the usual C++ stuff installed as well.
