Wilmslow-esque whinge: Friends who don't understand our ways of working
There is a very very simple rule never discuss money.
The only time I've not followed that rule is after being benched for a while I discovered all the comments the SIL had made to my wife. So when I bought her a brand new car I continually pointed out the full retail price and the fact that I had just paid cash for it.
The fact I actually got a 55% discount due to previous work with the manufacturer never entered the conversation.
Don't get him an ipad for his birthday will feel like charity or he will try to match your generosity, sounds like a proper gent. Find him something special he appreciates that doesn't cost much.

Yes I've learned a little late in this case, because I was disarmed by one of the friends open attitude towards his own earnings (> £110k). Normally I wouldn't tell anyone aside from the Mrs...I only very recently divulged my earnings to my own parents (who then told the in-laws d'oh!)

Proud parents are the worst .
Always happy to let on how well their off-spring are doing financially to all and sundry, or maybe that's just my mother.
Never has a man been heard to say on his death bed that he wishes he'd spent more time in the office.
1. Never get drawn into this.

3.>110k bloke was bigging himself up to score points. I would have just said that's nice and if pushed I would say I haven't earned much during the cumulative year I have been out of work in the last 5.....
As for parents, well 2 siblings in medical professions makes me the black sheep earnings wise....
