The sending of this material is against the NHS Zero Tolerance of abuse to it's staff (that's what the managers are for anyhow).

How would you feel if you came in to work and found these pictures on your desk? You would be revolted. And, if you, or your partner, have had an abortion, then this would cause nothing but emotional stress. Again, this is another form of abuse.

This person has been banned from the Trust except where he requires life-saving treatment.

This issue is all down to one group of people (or person) trying to inflict his/their view(s) onto someone else.

The UK is a democracy and we have the right of choice. It may be influenced by argument, but not by force. These people should not tell us how to live or work.
Do you think people who pack the confectionary into boxes at fudge making factories tell people what they do for a living?

Sparkle - you make very valid points.

How would you respond to the previous example I gave of the suicide bomber (assuming his burns from his failed bombing were bad but not life threatening) - should the hospital treat his burns or not ?

I am sure that if someone put offensive material on my desk I would be offended and would probably refuse to work for them. The difference is that the NHS is 'pre-paid' - this bloke is 70 odd years old - I wonder how much he has paid in taxes? Still no entitlement?

In all likelyhood the hospital would have been closed off following the attempted bombing anyway, assuming he got close enough for it to be clear that was the target. In that case the "casualty" would be taken to the nearest available A&E capable of treating them.

With the suicide bomber - if he was successful, I'd just shovel up the bits and put him the incinerator.

To answer your question, morally the bomber shouldn't be treated. Ethically, however, he should and then stand trial. His wounds would be treated to ensure he would survive then lock him away for life.

You may guess, but I work in the NHS and I have seen some shocking abuse to members of staff.

A few years back, I was monitoring a new A&E system one New Years Eve as it was very flaky.

The receptionists got nothing but abuse and one patient even spat at the poor lady. This sub-human had facial injuries and the sputem was laced with blood.

This person was arrested and taken to a cell and a Police Surgeon dealt with the injuries.

Poor lady was so upset. She had to have HIV and Heptatitus tests and was off work with emotional stress for 4 months. She never worked front line again.

As to Johns point. Yes he may have paid his contributions, but that is no excuse for abusing someone who is there to help the helpless and vulnerable.

Sometimes Nursing staff are physically attacked just for helping someone.

I'm with Sparkle and the trust on this one. It is clear trust policy to deny all but emergency treatment to people who are abusive to their staff. This is true of all trusts. Just because the abuse was sent by email doesn't make it any less abusive.

                  Tazmania sounds even more interesting.

It all sounds like petty vindictiveness.

I'm with the Trust on this one 'cos that's the kind of gal I am....

I agree. But the NHS have some responsibility in general .

Having been waiting for 3 hours for xray in casualty with my son after he fell off his bike (the previous wait for initial asessment being 2 hours) I enquired of the receptionist (perfectly civilly) if there was anything specific causing such a continued delay (the sign said 90 minutes). She ignored me and motioned to the sign saying "zero tolerance blah, blah blah". I repeated the question and got the same treatment, and the policy explained to me by a security man presumably called on the panic button.

I am sure that sort of deliberately provocative attitude is uncommon, but I wonder how much of the problem is on the NHS side of the fence. Casualty staff (unsurprisingly) can be incredibly antaganistic.

[edit: of course 8pm on a friday night in a seaside town on a bank holiday isn't the ideal time to need casualty....)
