Everyone sees how sportspeople perform because they play in front of 50 odd thousand people and millions of TV viewers. If they screw up, they get dropped and their earnings fall substantially. If they perform they are rewarded.

Yes, they might seem very well paid indeed for kicking a ball around, but most professional sportspeople earn a lot less, perform under a lot of pressure but still consider themselves very fortunate to be allowed to play their favourite game and be paid for it.

It doesn't matter one jot if he actually earned the bonus or not, the media are out to get anyone who works in a bank and receives a bonus, fueled by the public's desire for revenge. They'll conveniently not report details which support him getting the bonus.

I can take a safe bet that the bonus was strongly included in the contract, therefore making it illegal to refuse a bonus. They are all in it together, bankers and politicians, working to fleece the tax payer and fill their pockets.

Are you saying there there are multiple targets? Like:
target 1: that's what you get paid to meet
target 2: meet target 1 and we'll drop £2M into your pay packet.
target 3: there is no target 3

Spock: "Trained? Judging from you, I would have guessed it was trial and error."

Why should he get any shares if they drop in price? In US companies (at least tech) share options would have price fixed on date of joining and the person in question would have to pay it when they exercise, so if share options under water the person would have to pay over the odds, WTF he should get any bonus if shares tanked in the first place?

In any job where I have had a performance related bonus yes.

I ran the IT department without too many complaints. = My Job.

This quarter we need to do Y its over and above what we originally asked you to do but it should increase profits so we will pay you a bonus if you achieve these tasks. We may well pay you less than the going rate and make part of your package performance related (they did)

                      my Goals were:

Reduce costs by solving business problem A.
Improve resolution time above industry standard (last quarters performance) by 10% (3.3% per point).
Do integration Y with such and such restrictions.

each one was 33% miss one or partially complete I didn't get that %.

When we went corporate it became partially based on sales. Now its all based on sales. I have absolutely no control over sales. So now its a traditional bonus with no performance relation which is what most people are seeing his as.

I always made my bonus but I worked weekends and evenings to do it. Once it became sales related I don't bother.
