Does this mean we need new dishes and boxes, or is it a back-end type of deal?Originally posted by NickFitz View PostThe old one was what could be done a few years ago; the new one will be what can be done now

It's mainly about integrating stuff; it won't involve new dishes, although I don't know whether old boxes will be able to be upgraded or not.Originally posted by d000hg View PostDoes this mean we need new dishes and boxes, or is it a back-end type of deal?
To give just one of many possible examples: you're channel-surfing, and find something interesting, but you've missed the first twenty minutes. If the programme is available on that station's online On Demand service (e.g. BBC iPlayer or 4OD) then you can just select "Watch from start" via your box's menu and it will automagically switch to the online version and stream it to you.
Another one: you want to record a programme but you've already got a different recording scheduled that overlaps. The box points out that it can't record both, but the second one is also available an hour later (on the +1 channel) and furthermore is repeated tomorrow morning. Would you like to record it at one of those times instead? Alternatively, you can change the previously-scheduled programme to instead be recorded when it's on again the day after tomorrow. The choice, as they say, is yours
One thing I'm impressed with is the interaction design that makes these potentially complex scenarios very easy to deal with. However I'm starting to go way beyond the limits of my NDA now, so I'll shut up

Yeah, thanks Nick. Sounds interesting... though at the risk of sounding foolish many of these new features will require a web connection - similar to BT's home hub thingie? I suppose web-enabled TV is going to become de rigueur anyway.Originally posted by TheFaQQer View PostNice

Yep, it'll need to be connected to the net somehow for the online feastures to work.Originally posted by d000hg View PostYeah, thanks Nick. Been having no end of trouble with my STB today
Turned out the DHCP server had somehow managed to give the same IP address as mine to somebody else's box

The setting updates can be a bit flaky. It may be on there for days...Comment
