In truth, it would have been a lot worse if I'd found out after an accident, and there comes a time when you should take responsibility for your actions, pay your debt to society and begin the long, hard road to rehabilitation.

Also, I din't fancy, losing a day's work to stand up in court and explain how it was all Mrs OG's fault, landing her with a charge of keeping a car without insurance.
Could have sent the butler. Defo dump the missus in it next time, it'll learn her.
Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.

The owner of the car needs to insure it or declare it off the road though, so it would be the garage who are due a fine in that case. Of course, if they have declared it off road and the need for you to insure it is in the small print somewhere then you had better lube up.

          Well I've learned something today.

When given a courtesy car, ask if it comes with insurance or whether it require me to have insurance to drive it.

What about when test driving 2nd hand cars at garages? Often they just toss you the keys and say "take it for a spin". I've always had insurance anyway but assumed that I didn't really need it as the garage would have a policy to cover all their cars for test drives.

The garage would be on the hook for keeping a car without insurance. The driver is on the hook for driving without insurance.

Not if he's insured. That's the point I was making, if he's insured he won't get into trouble if the car isn't.

In my case, I know my insurance doesn't cover me on any other vehicle. A reason I questioned the insurance of the garage when I had the car.

Your insurance to drive other people's cars does not cover you if that car is not insured independently by its keeper.

Got it. And it only covers me for my own vehicle.
