Guessing they're in a gang because they want a sense of belonging, having common goals, customs and rituals.

Army gives them all that, but within a positive framework, and gives them skills to earn a living.

Show them there is an alternative.
Army does not want or need them. Our boys are good at what they do because they want to do it.
Wasting resources kicking some feral kids into shape will reduce forces capability.

I dont disagree with the sentiment but it is not the forces job. Maybe just maybe, if the spell offered as an alternative had some requirement to achieve or serve the time ducked then it may be OK.
    Just saying like.

    where there's chaos, there's cash !

I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong!

No we just need to be able to implement curfews in times like this.

The only problem is the way our laws are written some government will use it to stop peaceful marches.

What an utterly spastic idea! Why should law abiding people be confined to their dwellings after 6pm or something, and what about people who have to commute for shift work? It would lose more money to the economy than thieving looters could ever pinch or burn.

If the prisons here are full, the Government should arrange a deal with Iceland to open a prison camp in some remote desolate windswept wilderness, and ship offenders off there for a few years (with no subsidies for family visits). I'm sure the Icelanders would be pleased with the extra revenue, and convict work parties could sweep volcanic ash from the streets when there was a volcano on the go.

So you don't think kids under 18 should be required to be out with an adult after 6pm at times like this?

All the law abiding under 18 year olds I know at the moment are virtual prisoners during their summer holiday. They are not being allowed out just in case something happens let alone if they are on their own.

And yes the problem with the law it has to be written to be able to target adults as well as kids otherwise some tulip will take us to the ECHR.

Icelanders have a completely different attitude to crime and putting people particularly those under 18 in prison than England and Wales, so your idea is complete absurd.

Have the curfew in the estates where they're coming from. No need to lock down all of London if the scum can't get out.

Should be easier for the fuzz too, no need to chase them around the place, just block the exits.

Doesn't work like that in London. I know other cities have areas which are just council estates but in parts of London estates are mixed in with normal housing. Plus I'm sure in one area that was looted in London (due to a friend stupidly walking back at that time) the people didn't just come from the nearest estate.

Local authorities do have the powers to give under 18s curfews but in London they need to have the ability to do a London wide one and the powers take at least a month of court hearings before it can be used.
