So you're saying the best way to avoid detection of stealing a film is to steal wifi?

Ohhhh dear ..... Dont you see the irony there?

The best way to avoid detection, is to use a VPN service based in a country that decriminalises piracy, if you're that intent on stealing ....

How dare you! How very dare you? Once I've watched it I shall destroy it and bleach my eyes.

Only use encrypted peers and install Peer Guardian. Having said that nearly all the new stuff is on Rapidshare now.

Isn't that the same reason argument FOR having everyone's DNA on file so it will prevent crimes? "If you've got nothing to hide....."?

Never used torrents or p2p. Too much dodgy stuff, either infected, fake, or wrongly titled.

My dad used limewire in the past and I regularly had to disinfect his PC.

A friend regularly downloads movies via p2p and says they often turn out to be porn. His wife still seems to accept this excuse.

I find usenet a lot easier and more reliable for obtaining US shows not yet out in the UK*, which is all I use it for, mostly. Can find the nzb file and have an episode downloaded in under 10 minutes seeing as the binary providers offer full connection speed downloads.

For movies I prefer quality, so either buy the blu-ray or used DVDs from Amazon. Can get many DVDs for under 2 quid. Some start at 1p though p&p is set at 1.26 so 1.27 is the current minimum price. Also don't want to hog my bandwidth downloading stuff when I can get the postman to do the legwork, and it's probably cheaper than renting.

                  * I'd gladly pay a quid per episode if it was proper HD quality and available to download outside the USA. The companies trying to stop pirating are dumb. They could make loads of money by offering content for download worldwide upon release, if they priced it realistically. Instead their short-sightedness means they blame the pirates instead of themselves. The internet is global, all this region locking and phased releasing is way behind the times.

If they release things worldwide first, TV companies will pay far less for the right to premiere it in their country.

Depends how the figures add up. Say a TV studio put episodes on their website upon initial airing, $1 a pop. How many downloads worldwide would they need to offset the drop in licence fees they can sell the episodes on to other broadcasters for?

I think the majority of the typical viewing public don't download shows at all so for now there is still an audience using that as their first chance to watch new TV shows. There's always money in syndicating older shows too. Hence why there are many channels (e.g. UK Gold, or Dave) that show endless repeats.

Some studios already offer new episodes via iTunes with season passes, so I think this solution is happening. I'm sure there will always be some who would rather download for free than pay any price, but there will be a sweet spot where it becomes easier to pay the price for peace of mind.

Same goes for movies, though the broadband speeds need improving and download caps removed if they're going to deliver proper HD content this way.
