I don't live in a gated compound. And over the years I've come back at all hours, ocassionally the worse for wear and have had nary an incident.
I have had some idiot try to mug me in Camden though (he got a blow to the side of his head while I scarpered).
No doubt if you rocked up though, the local hoodlums would spot you for the country oik you are and relieve you of your valuables in short order
