I'm investing in high quality manufactured goods that will last a lifetime and are unlikely to be superseded due to technological progress. This also serves to increase one's quality of life.

Certainly seems more appealing than sinking my money into a pile of bricks that are both immobile and easily taxed.

There are still large parts of the UK that are still pleasant places to live so I've not fallen into the grass is greener trap yet.

          Any examples?

That's the sort of investment that appeals. Stuff you can enjoy instead of having something hidden in a safe which is only a future benefit and possibly only to those that inherit it and will no doubt sell it on asap!

You can get a pretty nice yacht for £100k or one which will comfortably cross the ocean for a fair chunk less. Not luxury and jacuzzis but solid and functional.

I took his comment to mean you could buy property abroad or invest your money in foreign bank accounts without moving there?

What happens if you put your £100k in a bank in some country with a 15% interest rate... or even borrow money in the UK to put in a savings account in another nation? Presumably there is something to stop this otherwise it would be free money.

The running costs are quite high. Maintainance will average out over time at perhaps 7-10% of the value of the boat per year, and realistically you will want to anchor in a proper harbour or marina now and then, which isn't that cheap. A powerboat will guzzle fuel which is also expensive.

                  Cookware and tools.

Not investments in the sense of being things that I can sell at a later date for more than I originally paid, but investments in the sense that I will save money in the long run and benefit in other ways from owning them e.g. good tools help preserve the value and prolong the lifetime of other things such as bicycles, good cookware means cooking is more fun so I save money on takeaways.
