If you are ill do you go to the doctor, or do you not consider medicine a valid science?
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

I've never said statisics as a science wasn't valid. please go back and re-read what I have said and then get back to me

Maybe not but you implied it with the following sweeping comment which was incorrect, it's not a matter of opinion.

I understand statistics and I know that they are usually not worth the paper they are written on.

If you'd like to understand them a little more I can point you to the correct literature.

I think the clue is that Janey uses statistics in the plural sense ("statistics are") i.e. as a collection of numbers, rather than in the singular sense ("statistics is"). Both are correct uses, the former is the what the layman understands, the latter, stats as a discipline and subject, is what the practitioner understands.

                    ok?
                    enough already?

I'm not at all saying that the statistical calcualtions are wrong or that they don't mean anything, I am talking about how people USE statisitics

                      Misuse perchance

                      Besides 13% of road accidents involve drink. 87% don't. 26% involve speed. 74% don't.

Seems clear to me it's much safer to get pissed and speed....
