Maybe not but you implied it with the following sweeping comment which was incorrect, it's not a matter of opinion.

I understand statistics and I know that they are usually not worth the paper they are written on.

If you'd like to understand them a little more I can point you to the correct literature.

I think the clue is that Janey uses statistics in the plural sense ("statistics are") i.e. as a collection of numbers, rather than in the singular sense ("statistics is"). Both are correct uses, the former is the what the layman understands, the latter, stats as a discipline and subject, is what the practitioner understands.

what I am saying is that I have studied statistics as well as having used them in a practical sense. I know that, if used correctly, they can produce meaningful results. however, in an awful lot of cases they are reported incorrectly and misleadingly. I also know that it is very easy to skew results to your desired outcome.
