If you are ill do you go to the doctor, or do you not consider medicine a valid science? The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.
But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.” -

Maybe not but you implied it with the following sweeping comment which was incorrect, it's not a matter of opinion.
I understand statistics and I know that they are usually not worth the paper they are written on.
If you'd like to understand them a little more I can point you to the correct literature. The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

I think the clue is that Janey uses statistics in the plural sense ("statistics are") i.e. as a collection of numbers, rather than in the singular sense ("statistics is"). Both are correct uses, the former is the what the layman understands, the latter, stats as a discipline and subject, is what the practitioner understands.Originally posted by BagpussMaybe not but you implied it with the following sweeping comment which was incorrect, it's not a matter of opinion.

I know that, if used correctly, they can produce meaningful results. however, in an awful lot of cases they are reported incorrectly and misleadingly. I also know that it is very easy to skew results to your desired outcome.
enough already?
I'm not at all saying that the statistical calcualtions are wrong or that they don't mean anything, I am talking about how people USE statisitics"Well behaved women rarely make history"

Besides 13% of road accidents involve drink. 87% don't. 26% involve speed. 74% don't.
Seems clear to me it's much safer to get pissed and speed....Comment
