This disaster will go global, although not in the nuclear sense.

    Poor sods.
We'll be poor sods too when Japan ups it's oil and gas imports for a few years, if that increases the price of oil.

(although I'm not trying to make light of their present situation)

Not all, the one I worked on was about 4km away from the sea. Well, estuary. We had 'the pipeline' tho - water was pumped up and 'stuff' pumped down....

My son saw the appeal on the telly but he told me that they have enough money already: apparently, the bloke on the telly had two boats outside his house.

Well that's the end of Nuclear:

Japan earthquake, nuclear energy: Japan's crisis may have already derailed 'nuclear renaissance' - latimes.com

Which is great for my oil and gas shares.

No AtW, there are NO good reasons for living in Birmingham.

I wonder, apart from heat and poison levels, how long would a person last after exposure to a nuclear core? Can extreme levels kill you in minutes like in Star Trek or would it be certain death in a few days?
A human wouldn't survive as long as a Vulcan. Spock amazed Dr McCoy by surviving as long as he did.

Not sure if anyone already posted this link:

Fukushima is a triumph for nuke power: Build more reactors now! ? The Register

I'm just a regular physics graduate, not a nuclear specialist, but it makes sense to me unless he's reporting on inaccurate facts.

                      I like this line:
but quite frankly being a nuclear powerplant worker at Fukushima has been pretty safe compared to just being an ordinary citizen in quake-hit Japan.
or in other words the nuclear power plant was one of the safer parts of the NE coast of Japan.

I think it's a bit early to be as optimistic as he writes about recommissioning those 3 reactors and having no further cooling troubles with them. It would be great if the end result spurs more research into nuclear technology though.
