I've deleted all racing games off my iPod touch that rely on tilting the device to steer. For one thing I can't see where I'm going when I've tilted the screen 45 degrees.

Similarly if you have to put your finger on the screen you obscure the view.

Is there any reason why touch screen typing, that can be tailored to the size of an individuals hands (albeit give a large enough screen area to play with), need be slower than typing on a mechanical keyboard?

I'd guess you can get very good but the "large enough screen area" is kind of important. And I reckon knowing where the keys are for touch-typing is important.

However there are new types of 'keyboard' which rely on you dragging your finger between keys, not tapping them. Apparently very good, there's no reason a standard keyboard is the best way to type on touch-screen.

Maybe everything will be Google Android. Good news for IT people as developing with Java/android in Eclipse takes far longer than doing something similar with .NET in Visual Studio.

I think the machine you use will show your status in the hierarchy.
Lower level technical types like analysts, developers and support people will be wedded to a keyboard for obvious reasons.
Higher level strategic types will only need the output that the lower levels produce - and a touchscreen is good enough for that.

As I see it the "higher level" types are today slaves of email.
If someone makes a devise with a great hardware keyboard and integrated mouse and only loads outlook as software - that would be a pc killer for the mamagement types.

Games consoles have shown that keyboard+mouse is far better for some genres. Touch-screen isn't the ultimate solution IMO especially for typing. How is it going to compete with having 2 30" monitors and an ergonomic keyboard?

Incidentally, regarding the mouse, which i didn't comment on. Isn't a stylus (for those times when a finger is no good), way, way, way better than a mouse?

Is a keyboard all that? Whatever happened to voice recognition? To embarrassing or slow to use?
