I have a 12 year old Vectra and it's great, these days "old" cars aren't old any more. It was about 4 grand. The things is with an old car you get all the extras and then some, my Vectra is top of the range, automatic, fuel injected plush interior, it's reliable and it doesn't look old, hey it's got the cool metallic finish. A new car well it's new ...but it'll be basic.

For 12 K you could get a great looking merc or BMW.

Do you really want to drive around in a Polo when for the same price you can get a fuel injected Beamer.

All cars have been fuel injected since the early 90s.

Either the car has the performance of a milk float or is as light as a feather, and either way you'll be toast in the event of an accident.

Get a proper contractor's 2+ litre car FFS, like a Merc.
To avoid paying ridiculously high road tax? Fuel economy? Avoiding high dealer servicing costs? To avoid paying £150 a corner on tyers? You do know petrol cost £1.30 a litre.

Depends on how new you want it, personally I wouldn't want anything that wasn't at least 2 years old, so yes £12k is too much.

According to Whatcar (2 years ago) a 3 year old 1.6 petrol Focus is the best value car you can buy.

Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

'Throwing together', 'cheap 3rd party components' (all manufacturers use 3rd party component suppliers) and consistently most reliable manufacturer doesn't compute?

How do explain 'well built', supposed 'quality' brands consistently falling below expectations?

Those marketing campaigns are worth every penny.

Isn't it Toyotas that keep killing their occupants? By accelerating until they crash, or refusing to acknowledge requests for the brakes to be applied? And dodgy drive shafts? And buggy stability control systems? And "steering software features"? And the steering columns, valve springs, electronic throttle control and cruise control? Resulting in numerous law suits? And product recalls over and over and over again?

If you gave me a new Toyota I wouldn't take the keys off you in case they stabbed me in the leg giving me toxemia, strangled my family and massacred the entire street with flamethrowers then ran off laughing.
